rooibos

🌱 origin: South Africa, Cedarberg region

🌱 type: Rooibos

🌱  picked: May – July

🌱 flavour: grassy, woody, malty

🌱 aroma: delicate, fresh

The name Rooibosch or Rooibos (we say ‘roy-boss’) means red bush, thanks to the dark red colour it accquires during the oxidation process.

This sweet and naturally caffeine free tea was first harvested and used as a herbal medicine by South Africa’s KhoiSan people centuries ago.

Rooibos is a member of the pea family (Favaceae) and grows as a small, red-stemmed bush with long needle-like leaves and yellow pea-shaped flowers.

It is hard to believe, but the entire world’s supply of Rooibos tea is grown in the small, mountainous area of Cedarberg region in Western and Northern Cape Province of South Africa.

Rooibos Field

Annually, around 6,000 -7,000 tonnes of Rooibos is harvested by 350-550 rooibos farms in the area.

Green Rooibos Tea FAQs

Green Rooibos tea is rich in antioxidants and known for its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. It may support heart health, improve skin clarity, reduce oxidative stress, and aid digestion.

The main difference lies in how they’re processed. Green Rooibos tea is unfermented, retaining more antioxidants and a fresher, grassier flavour. Red Rooibos tea is oxidized, giving it a deeper colour and a sweeter, richer taste. Both are caffeine-free and packed with health benefits.

Yes! Green Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine-free and contains calming compounds, making it a gentle, soothing choice for evening relaxation or bedtime.

Green Rooibos tea contains phytoestrogens, plant-based compounds that may gently influence hormonal balance. While generally safe, people with hormone-sensitive conditions should consult their doctor before regular use.

Green Rooibos tea is typically considered safe for pregnancy due to its lack of caffeine and low tannin content. It may also help with digestion and hydration. Still, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider before introducing any herbal tea during pregnancy.

Yes. Green Rooibos is high in polyphenols and flavonoids, which have natural anti-inflammatory properties. It’s often used to help soothe joint pain, reduce swelling, and support overall immune health. Studies also suggest that Green Rooibos may help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and support fat metabolism due to its antioxidant activity. While not a miracle solution, it can be a healthy addition to a balanced lifestyle.

Green Rooibos tea is very gentle, but individuals with hormone-sensitive conditions or those on medications (e.g. statins or blood thinners) should check with a healthcare provider before regular use. Adverse reactions are rare.

Who would have thought Green Rooibos even existed!? I was curious to try it and I thought it was very pleasant - much grassier flavour than traditional rooibos - reminds me more of green tea (which I"m a big fan of). Definitely recommend!
