the teapro difference: leaf-only quality
If you have tried Yerba Mate before and found it overly bitter or “dusty,” it was likely a lower-grade blend filled with stems (palos) and powder (polvo).
While we stock a whole-plant version for those who want to compare the traditional style, our focus is on premium leaf-only mate. By removing the bitter stalks and fine dust, we create a much smoother, cleaner brew that highlights the natural herbaceous sweetness of the plant.
Our leaf-only focus ensures you get more of the active “Mateine” and antioxidants in every spoonful, with a far more pleasant drinking experience.
unroasted vs. roasted (unsmoked!)
We offer two distinct styles of Yerba Mate to suit your palate:
Green (Unroasted) Mate: Fresh, grassy, and vibrant. This is the classic “green” energy boost that tastes like a bold herbal tea.
Roasted Mate: For those who prefer a deeper flavour, our roasted mate offers toasted, chocolatey notes similar to dark coffee. Importantly, our mate is roasted, not smoked. This means you get that delicious toasted aroma without the health concerns associated with traditional smoke-drying processes.
what does yerba mate taste like?
Yerba Mate has a distinct, earthy, and “green” flavour profile. Many describe it as having the body of coffee, the health benefits of green tea, and the euphoria of chocolate.
Our leaf-only mate offers a fresh, grassy taste with subtle notes of toasted hay. If you opt for the roasted version, expect a comforting nuttiness and a finish reminiscent of cocoa.
how to brew yerba mate
You can enjoy Mate the traditional way with a Gourd and Bombilla (metal straw), or simply brew it like a standard tea.
Water temperature: 70-80°C (Never use boiling water, as it can scorch the leaves!)
Amount: 3-5g per 350ml (Western) or fill your Gourd halfway (Traditional)
Steep time: 3-5 minutes
Infusions: The leaves are incredibly resilient; you can keep topping up your cup or Gourd 5-10 times until the flavour fades.
the “ultimate” energy boost
Yerba Mate contains “Mateine,” a form of caffeine that provides a long-lasting, focused mental clarity. It is famous for giving you the “kick” of coffee but with a calm, balanced feel.
This makes it a favourite among athletes, students, and professionals who need to stay sharp and productive without the jitters or the post-caffeine “slump.”
what are the health benefits of yerba mate?
Yerba Mate is a nutritional powerhouse, containing more antioxidants than most green teas, along with vitamins A, C, E, and B-complex.
It is known to boost physical performance by improving fat oxidation, supporting metabolism, and enhancing focus. Our unsmoked roasting process ensures you get these benefits in the healthiest way possible.
yerba mate varieties at a glance
Whether you want it pure or blended, we have a Mate for every goal:
Pure Premium Leaf-Only: Our highest grade. Smooth, earthy, and powerful.
Roasted Mate: Toasted, rich, and caffeine-heavy. A perfect coffee alternative.
Workout Blends: Refreshing mixes that combine Yerba Mate with energising botanicals to create the ultimate pre-workout refresher.
can you drink yerba mate cold?
Yes! In South America, this is known as “Tereré.” It is incredibly refreshing and one of the best ways to enjoy our flavoured blends.
Simply brew your Mate with cold water and ice, perhaps adding a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint, for a crisp, energising summer drink.
how should I store yerba mate?
Yerba Mate is quite hardy, but to keep that fresh “green” flavour, store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
Because our Mate is leaf-only and lacks the woody stalks, it is even more important to keep it airtight to preserve those delicate aromatic oils.
is yerba mate good for beginners?
If you are new to Mate, our leaf-only and roasted options are the best place to start. They are much more approachable and less intimidating than the heavy, smoky varieties found elsewhere.
For a first-timer, we recommend trying our Roasted Mate if you love coffee, or one of our Refreshing Blends if you prefer something light and energising.
