What makes Dragon Well tea special?

Dragon Well tea is not just another green tea – it is one of China’s Ten Famous Teas, known for its:

– Hand-flattened leaves during pan-firing

– Distinctive nutty (chestnut-like) aroma

– Smooth, mellow body with no bitterness

– Bright, clear liquor with a soft green hue

Long Jing, which can be translated to Dragon Well is China’s most celebrated green tea.

Long Jing village gets its name from the mineral rich well water that mixes with lighter rain water during storms that mix to create shapes that resemble mythical dragons.

Declared as an ‘imperial’ tea by the emperor Long Jing has remained in the spotlight ever since.

Longjing tea processing

Unlike mass-produced green teas, authentic Longjing is crafted using traditional methods that preserve both flavour and nutritional properties.

The youngest, freshest buds are picked in the Spring before the Qingming festival and masterfully pan-fried, giving the leaf its iconic ‘spear’ shape and nutty flavour.

This process can be adopted by any tea producer throughout China, but it is the rich soils and terroir of the protected area of Hangzhou that imparts a rich, velvety- thickness and texture that is truly unique and cannot be faked.

Origin & Sourcing

Our Dragon Well is sourced from Zhejiang Province, the historic heartland of Longjing production.

While the most famous teas come from the West Lake (Xi Hu) region, high-quality Longjing is also produced in surrounding areas using the same traditional techniques.

We prioritise:

– Early spring harvests for freshness

– Tender young leaves for complexity and sweetness

– Careful processing to maintain aroma and structure

Understanding Quality: what sets this tea apart

Not all Dragon Well tea is equal.

Key factors that influence quality include:

Harvest Timing

– Pre-Qingming (early spring): highest grade, delicate and sweet

– Later harvests: stronger, more vegetal

Leaf Appearance

– Uniform, flat, spear-shaped leaves

– Vibrant green colour without dullness

Processing Method

– Traditional pan-firing enhances the signature chestnut aroma

– Proper technique prevents bitterness and preserves smoothness

This tea has been selected for its balance of freshness, aroma, and natural sweetness, making it ideal for both newcomers and seasoned tea drinkers.

Soft umami flavour with a nutty and fresh mellow sweetness, not too bitter. I’m obsessed with this tea and can’t stop drinking it. I brewed it 3 to 4 times before the flavour started to fade. Watching the leaves unfurl in hot water is so satisfying.

This green tea was definitely my favourite. I really enjoyed drinking this on an evening when I’m settling down for bed with a good book, it has that nice relaxing feel to it & I love how smooth it tastes without any bitter aftertaste (like other green tea brands). x
