Packed with antioxidants and nutrients, it offers the focus of coffee without the jitters, while bringing people together through a ritual that celebrates connection and vitality.
Yerba Mate (yer-bah MAH-tay) is more than just a drink – it’s a living tradition. For centuries, people in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay have cherished this infusion made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree.
Known as a “gift from the gods” by the Guaraní people, it became the beloved companion of gauchos and communities, prized for its comforting energy and vibrant cultural significance.
What makes Yerba Mate extraordinary is its ability to bridge flavour, energy, and wellness. Packed with antioxidants (like polyphenols and saponins), it supports immune health, heart wellness, and metabolic balance.
This tea isn’t just about wellness – it’s about connection. Traditionally sipped from a shared gourd (mate) with a metal straw (bombilla), Yerba Mate fosters social bonding, mindfulness, and a ritual of slow, shared enjoyment

Yerba Mate (pronounced yer-BAH mah-TAY) is a vibrant herbal infusion made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis holly, native to the misty forests of Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and southern Uruguay.
Yerba Mate comes from the dried leaves and stems of the Ilex paraguariensis tree, native to South America’s subtropical forests. When steeped, it creates a naturally energising infusion with earthy, herbal notes.
For the Guaraní people, Yerba Mate was a sacred “gift from the gods,” used to nourish body and spirit, sustain hunters, and strengthen community ties.
By the 17th century, Jesuit missionaries helped spread its cultivation, turning it from an indigenous ritual into a cultural cornerstone across Spanish South America.
Today, sharing Mate remains a cherished tradition in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil.
Passed from hand to hand in a carved gourd (mate) with a metal straw (bombilla), it’s more than a drink – it’s a symbol of connection, hospitality, and South American culture.
More than just a drink, Yerba Mate continues to embody the warmth and togetherness of South American culture
The Teapro Calabash Gourd and Bombilla kit is the perfect way to brew this tea. Yerba mate is all about friendship and sharing, best enjoyed in a mate sharing circle – or ‘ronda del mate’. Traditionally, only one person does the pouring in the group – the ‘cebador’.
2. Fill a thermos with hot (not boiling) water
3. Fill a cured gourd about ⅔ with loose yerba mate
4. Tap the yerba mate to one side of the gourd to create a ‘little mountain’ and ‘little valley’ inside
5. Moisten the valley with a splash of cool water, keep the little mountain dry
6. Gently insert the filter tip of the bombilla straw into the little valley
7. Pour hot water into the little valley about halfway up the gourd. Sip until no water is left
Now you are ready to pour sips for the friends in your yerba mate circle. Each person receives a half-full gourd, which they are encouraged to finish (taking just one sip is considered impolite). Once “empty” they pass the gourd back to the pourer for refilling.
