how are teas categorised by type?

Tea type refers to how the leaves are processed after harvesting – and this single factor determines more about a tea’s flavour, colour, and character than almost anything else, including origin.
The same Camellia sinensis plant that produces a delicate white tea can, with different processing, become a rich black tea or a complex oolong. Understanding tea types is the foundation of understanding tea itself – and it is the clearest way to find what you enjoy most.

what tea types does Teapro stock?

Our collection spans the full spectrum of the world’s most significant tea styles, from the most widely drunk to the most rare.
Black Tea – fully oxidised, bold, and malty. The most widely drunk tea in the world. Takes milk well and delivers a confident, satisfying cup.
Green Tea – unoxidised, fresh, and vibrant. Ranges from the nutty sweetness of Chinese pan-fired styles to the umami depth of Japanese steamed varieties.
White Tea – minimally processed, delicate, and naturally sweet. The gentlest of all true teas, with a light, honey-like character and exceptional antioxidant content.
Oolong Tea – partially oxidised, sitting between green and black. Floral, creamy, and complex – one of the most nuanced and rewarding tea styles in the world.
Pu-erh Tea – post-fermented and aged. Earthy, deep, and evolving over time like a fine wine. Available in raw (Sheng) and ripe (Shou) styles across multiple vintages.
Matcha – stone-ground whole-leaf green tea powder. Rich, creamy, and intensely umami – the highest concentration of green tea’s natural compounds in any form.
Chai Tea – spiced tea blends rooted in Indian Ayurvedic tradition. Warming, aromatic, and deeply comforting.
Herbal Tea – caffeine-free infusions made from herbs, flowers, roots, and botanicals. Covers everything from calming chamomile to immunity-boosting echinacea.
Rooibos Tea – naturally caffeine-free, smooth, and gently sweet. Grown exclusively in South Africa’s Cederberg mountains, with a warm, vanilla-like character.
Fruit Tea – vibrant, naturally caffeine-free fruit and botanical blends. Bold, fruity, and delicious hot or cold.
Flowering Tea – hand-tied tea bulbs that bloom dramatically in hot water, combining visual beauty with fragrant, delicate flavour.
Yerba Mate – South American leaf tea with a bold, grassy, naturally energising character and a uniquely high caffeine content.
Yellow Tea – one of China’s rarest tea styles, lightly “smothered” during processing for a mellow, honeyed sweetness that is quite unlike any other tea type.

what caffeine levels are available?

Our type collection spans the full caffeine spectrum – from high-caffeine matcha and yerba mate to low-caffeine white and green teas, through to completely caffeine-free herbal, rooibos, and fruit teas.
Every product page includes clear information on caffeine level, so you can always make the right choice for the time of day and how you want to feel.

how do I choose which tea type is right for me?

A good starting point is to think about what you already enjoy. If you drink black tea with milk, you might love a robust Assam or a spiced chai. If you prefer something lighter and more delicate, white or green tea is likely your territory. If you want something entirely caffeine-free with natural sweetness, rooibos or herbal tea is the answer.
Not sure where to begin? Our Become a Teapro educational programme takes you through all the major tea types in a structured, guided journey – the best possible introduction to the full breadth of the tea world.

can all tea types be cold brewed?

Most teas respond beautifully to cold brewing – green, white, oolong, and fruit teas are particularly stunning served cold, producing naturally sweet, refreshing drinks with none of the bitterness that over-steeping with hot water can create.
Add 4g of tea to 500ml of cold water and steep in the fridge for 4-8 hours, depending on the tea type.
Rooibos, herbal, and fruit teas are excellent cold-brewed as well – naturally sweet and brilliantly refreshing over ice.

is loose-leaf tea better than tea bags?

Loose-leaf tea uses whole or large-cut leaves that have room to fully expand in water, releasing their full range of flavour, aroma, and natural compounds. Tea bags typically contain broken leaf fragments or dust – a lower grade that brews quickly but with far less complexity and nuance.
The difference is noticeable from the very first cup. At Teapro, we source only premium loose-leaf teas – no bags, no fillers, and no compromises on quality.

is Teapro tea good for beginners?

Absolutely – and browsing by type is one of the simplest ways to find your starting point. Every tea in our range comes with clear brewing guidance, so you always know how to get the best from your leaves.
If you’re completely new to loose-leaf tea, herbal teas and rooibos require the least precision and deliver immediate, enjoyable results. If you’re ready to explore further, green tea and oolong are endlessly rewarding destinations that reveal more with every cup.
