🌱 originRwanda, Africa

🌱 type: Black tea

🌱 flavour: strong, nutty, full-bodied

🌱 aroma: nuts, spices

This pure black tea comes from the volcanic mountains near the ancient forests of Rwanda where indigenous wild Mountain Gorilla families live.

It is a unique physical environment and is the last mountain rainforest left on earth.

This area delivers a complex hearty and spicy black tea and we chose an ethically produced OP1, who’s colour and shape reminds us of the Mountain Gorilla and our need to conserve these wild environments. Gorillas are also known for their love of consuming only the finest vegetation and are very picky.

We want to support the Rwandan tea growing community maintain their pristine forest environment and support their efforts to maintain their stunning wildlife.

black tea faqs

Black tea is a fully oxidised tea known for its bold flavour and rich colour. In the UK, it’s often simply called “tea,” especially when served with milk. In many parts of Africa – especially in tea-producing countries, black tea is also the default type and is often just called “tea” as well.

However, in China, where tea classification is based on the colour of the brewed liquid rather than the leaves, black tea is known as “hong cha” (红茶), meaning “red tea.

Black tea is deeply rooted in British culture – it’s comforting, versatile, and pairs perfectly with milk and biscuits. Daily tea rituals, from breakfast brews to afternoon tea, make it more than a drink – it’s a national tradition.

Many people – especially in the UK – add milk to black tea. It softens the tannins and brings a creamy balance to strong blends like Assam or English Breakfast.

Our Rwanda black tea can be enjoyed both with milk and on its own.

Black tea is rich in antioxidants called flavonoids, which may support heart health, digestion, and mental alertness. It’s also naturally calorie-free, making it a smart and satisfying choice when consumed in moderation.

Yes, black tea contains moderate levels of caffeine – typically around 40 – 70 mg per 240ml cup (8 oz), depending on factors like steeping time and leaf quality.

In comparison, coffee usually contains 95 – 120 mg of caffeine per cup, nearly twice as much.

This makes black tea a gentler option for those looking to boost focus and energy without the intense buzz or jitters that coffee can sometimes cause

The key difference lies in processing. Black tea is fully oxidised, giving it a darker colour and stronger flavour. Green tea is unoxidised, resulting in a lighter, more delicate taste and slightly lower caffeine content.

In large amounts, black tea may cause restlessness, bloating, or upset stomach due to its caffeine and tannin content. Stick to 2 – 4 cups a day to enjoy the benefits without discomfort.

Use freshly boiled water and steep for 3–5 minutes. Stronger teas like Rwandan black tea or Breakfast blends take well to milk, while delicate Chinese black teas are best served black.

Adjust brew time and strength to your taste.
You can add honey or sugar to taste.
