what makes Indian chai so special?

Chai – meaning simply “tea” in Hindi – is far more than a drink in India. It is a daily ritual, a form of hospitality, and a living tradition of spice blending that draws on thousands of years of Ayurvedic medicine. The combination of warming spices like ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, and clove with a robust black tea base creates a cup that is greater than the sum of its parts.
What sets authentic Indian chai apart from mass-produced imitations is the quality and character of the spices. Our Indian chai blends use whole and ground spices sourced for their potency and flavour – producing a depth and warmth that tea bags simply cannot replicate.

what does Indian chai taste like?

Our Indian collection spans a range of chai styles, from the bold and traditional to the gently soothing and the refreshingly unexpected.
Traditional Masala Chai is rich, spiced, and warming – the classic blend of black tea with ginger, cardamom, and aromatic spices that rewards brewing strong and drinking with milk. Peppermint & Green Chai is lighter and refreshing, combining a green tea base with cooling peppermint for a chai that energises without heaviness.
Soothing Turmeric Chai brings the golden warmth of organic turmeric together with chai spices for a deeply comforting, anti-inflammatory cup. Honey Tulsi Chai introduces holy basil (tulsi) – one of Ayurveda’s most revered herbs – with a natural sweetness and a gently floral, calming character.
Each blend is distinct, but all share the warmth, depth, and comfort that define Indian tea at its best.

how to brew Indian chai

Chai is traditionally brewed with milk for a rich, creamy result – though it is equally delicious brewed black with water alone.
Water temperature: 90-100°C
Amount: 2-3g per 350ml
Steep time: 3-5 minutes
Chai latte method: Simmer 2-3g of chai blend in equal parts water and milk for 3-4 minutes, strain, and sweeten to taste with honey or sugar. This is the traditional Indian approach and produces a wonderfully rich, fragrant result.

what caffeine levels are available?

Caffeine levels vary across our Indian collection. Traditional Masala Chai and Honey Tulsi Chai are based on black tea and sit at the medium-to-high end of the caffeine spectrum. Peppermint & Green Chai uses a green tea base for a lighter, gentler caffeine level.
Soothing Turmeric Chai is naturally lower in caffeine and is a wonderful choice for those seeking the warmth and comfort of chai without a strong stimulant effect – particularly suited to evenings or sensitive drinkers.

what are the health benefits?

Chai has been valued in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, and for good reason. The spices at the heart of our Indian blends – ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, clove – each carry well-documented properties: anti-inflammatory, digestive-supporting, circulation-boosting, and warming to the body and mind.
Turmeric Chai adds the celebrated benefits of curcumin – turmeric’s active compound – which is one of the most studied natural anti-inflammatories in the world. Honey Tulsi Chai features holy basil, an adaptogenic herb widely used in Ayurveda for its stress-reducing and immune-supporting qualities.

Indian chai blends at a glance

Our Indian collection showcases four distinct chai styles, each crafted with real spices and premium tea leaves.
Traditional Masala Chai: The classic – bold, warming, and deeply spiced. Ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, and clove with a robust black tea base. Best brewed strong with milk.
Refreshing Peppermint & Green Chai: A lighter take on chai – a green tea base with cooling peppermint and gentle spice. Uplifting, fresh, and surprisingly versatile.
Soothing Turmeric Chai: Organic turmeric root meets warming chai spices for a golden, deeply comforting cup – naturally anti-inflammatory and wonderfully aromatic.
Honey Tulsi Chai: A gentle, floral chai featuring holy basil – one of Ayurveda’s most revered herbs – with a natural sweetness and a calming, restorative quality.

can you cold brew Indian chai?

Absolutely – and iced chai is one of the most refreshing drinks imaginable. Cold brewing draws out the spice character without the bitterness that can come from over-steeping with hot water.
Add 4g of chai blend to 500ml of cold water or cold milk and steep in the fridge for 6-8 hours. Strain, sweeten to taste, and serve over ice.
The Peppermint & Green Chai and Turmeric Chai are particularly delicious served cold — cooling, vibrant, and full of flavour.

how should I store Indian chai?

Store in a cool, dark, airtight container away from moisture, heat, and strong odours. The aromatic spices in chai blends are especially sensitive to light and air – good storage will keep their warmth and fragrance vivid for much longer.
Chai blends are best enjoyed within 12-18 months of purchase for their fullest spice character.

is Indian chai good for beginners?

It is one of the most immediately welcoming and crowd-pleasing categories in the Teapro range. Chai’s bold, spiced warmth tends to delight people who are new to loose-leaf tea – particularly when brewed as a latte with milk and a touch of honey.
If you are new to chai, start with the Traditional Masala or Honey Tulsi for something familiar and deeply satisfying. If you prefer something lighter and refreshing, the Peppermint & Green Chai is a brilliant place to begin.
